Why this museum is different
Sanxingdui is the remains of a Shu culture that flourished in the Chengdu plain around three thousand years ago and produced objects with no obvious precedent: bronze masks with eyes on stalks, a bronze tree four metres tall, a gold mask, a standing figure 2.6 metres high. The style has nothing to do with the Central Plains bronze tradition that Chinese archaeology usually describes, which is why the site rewrote the textbook rather than fitting into it.
The new halls, opened in 2023, display the sacrificial-pit finds at a scale the old museum could not. Three exhibition halls plus the outdoor site. Three to four hours is the honest allowance for a visitor who reads anything.

Checked 21 October 2026 across two independent guides quoting the museum's own system. The museum sells nothing at the door — a wasted round trip is the standard failure mode, not a queue.
Getting there without the station mistake
- 1
Book five days ahead, at 20:00
The release is nightly and rolling. Holiday and school-holiday dates clear within minutes, so set an alarm and have your passport number ready.
- 2
Train to Guanghan North — not Sanxingdui station
Chengdu East to Guanghan North (广汉北) takes about 18 minutes for roughly CNY 18–22. Sanxingdui station is named for the area and is further from the museum with worse connections.
- 3
Taxi or bus 13 for the last 8km
Taxis wait outside Guanghan North and take about 16 minutes for CNY 20–30. Guanghan bus 13 goes to the museum for CNY 2 and takes 20–25 minutes.
- 4
Use the staffed lane at the gate
Foreign passports are accepted as the booking document, but the automatic gates usually are not — go to a staffed lane and keep the booking confirmation open.
Worth half a day?
This is the single best non-city excursion from Chengdu if you care about history, and it is also the easiest to get wrong: no ticket at the door, a booking window that opens five days out, and a station name designed to mislead. Get those three right and it is fifty minutes each way for a collection you will not see anywhere else.
If museums are not your thing, Dujiangyan is a better use of the same half day. If you have already been to both, Leshan is the third.
